Online Shopping - eCommerce and Online Trade in India

Over the past few years, India has shown a steady progress in eCommerce. Merchants and dealers of various goods and products have increased over the past few years and want to reach out to national as well as the international customers. The best alternative is undoubtedly online trade. In the initial years, eCommerce faced bottlenecks such as lack of computer penetration and cyber literacy that had resulted in a stunted growth. However, today the situation is much positive and flourishing. People are much more cyber savvy than before, and are willing to delve in multiple online avenues for business as well as purchases.

Whether it is purchasing something for ourselves or sending across a gift to a distant friend, acquaintance or relative, most of us resort to online shopping. The main reason for this is the set of benefits that one experiences. Firstly, you can shop from these portals anytime of the day and from anywhere. You can be at home taking care of your household chores or in office preparing for a presentation, all you need is the internet and a computer, to shop online. Everything happens with the “click” of the mouse. Secondly, since you can shop from anywhere, anytime you need not travel down to the shopping mall, facing the mob and traffic congestion on your way. Hence, you save a few bucks as well. Finally, while you are shopping online you can compare prices of one website with the other, in minutes. Whereas, if you had to do the same thing in a shopping mall, it would become tedious and time consuming roaming from one shop to the other.

Online shopping sites in India presents you with a plethora of goods and products. Browse into any top online shopping portal and you will find various sections such as electronics, gadgets, computer peripherals, attire, beauty products, health care and child care products, lifestyle and interior décor, decoratives, jewelry, cosmetics, accessories for men and women, kids wear, consumer durable and household appliances, chocolates, paintings, gift vouchers, gift articles and many others. As you browse, the WebPages display all the necessary details about the product and its price. If you have any query, you can dial in the 24 x 7-customer care number for further assistance on the product, billing, and delivery or for any other purposes.

Over the past few years, India online shopping has increased in leaps and bounds. One of the major reasons is because of the “Cash on Delivery” option that most sites are now adopting. This is because not many people are comfortable in sharing their financial details online to any third party. In addition to that, keeping in mind certain issues regarding cyber payment frauds that occurred in the past most people are inhibited to shop with their debit or credit card. Hence, the COD option is safe and encourages people to purchase goods and products online.

Buy Book Online - Rivers of Smoke by Amitav Ghosh

Amitav Ghosh born in Kolkata, studied at the University of Delhi and Oxford, and has taught in a number of Institutions. His two latest novels carry us deep inside the opium trade in the 1830s. River of Smoke is the second volume of a proposed Ibis trilogy, the first of which is the “Sea of Poppies”, published in 2008, was shortlisted for the Man Booker prize in 2008. It focuses on the Opium Wars of the mid-19th century. His novel is not a rage, but a panoramic history, rich in period detail and full of believable characters.

River of Smoke follows the story through to Canton in China, where the opium is sold. It talks about how opium is sold illegally by the traders mostly British and how the Chinese authorities are trying to prevent imports of this deadly drug, which has made the Chinese population addicted to this drug.

Amitav’s novel takes you back in time when there was chaos in China over the opium import. He hold you spellbound with the details of the period and explains the life stories of characters he introduces, that you really are transported to that era. He pours fierce energy when he talks about plotlines as the action shifts from the Indian Ocean to Canton’s 19th century waterways.

The primary focus of the novel is Bahram Modi, a wealthy Parsi opium trader from Bombay, his estranged half-Chinese son Ah Fatt, the Parsi community where he's a lowly son-in-law in a superior family; and in his relations with the Canton foreign traders.  He is projected as a far more sympathetic character than his fellow traders.

The story also talks about the orphaned amateur botanist Paulette who is accompanying a Cornish botanist to China on an expedition to track down the mythical golden camellia, a rare flower and a motley collection of others in pursuit of romance and riches. All struggle to cope with their losses—and, for some, unimaginable freedoms—in the alleys and crowded nineteenth-century Canton.

The novel is a Pandora of curiosities, crowded with items that hold a story of their own. River of Smoke, book two in Amitav Ghosh’s Ibis trilogy, transports you into another mesmerizing dream world is another masterpiece from his stable. What it does offer is an alternate view of history — the age of the Opium War and the history of the East.
